About Us

Welcome to Turquoise Coast Library

Turquoise Coast Township (2022)

Serving the Turquoise Coast township for 53 years, we pride ourselves on being a valuable hub to the community. Providing a wide range of resources, services and community information to all residents of the Shire of Gascoyne.

The historical National Trust building was originally home to the Turquoise Coast Port Authority until 1947, when new facilities were built and the Port Authority relocated. The building was left abandoned and in disrepair until 1970, when Mrs Margaret Birchwood (President of the local Country Women's Association), decided the structure would be put to good use as a community library.

Margaret Birchwood (1972)

After organising many fundraising events and lobbying politicians and local business owners, Margaret's efforts resulted in the restoration and refurbishment of the dilapidated building into the glorious library it is today.

She also liaised with the National Trust and the building is now historically listed.
Margaret served on the library's board of directors right up until her passing in 1998. A commemorative statue was erected in her honour and resides in the library's picturesque front garden.

Since it's doors officially opened on July 12th 1975, Turquoise Coast library has been a cornerstone of the community, offering everything from historical books to up-to-date online resources. Please check our 'services' page to see the full range of what the library has to offer.
